Ed
Fair CD
I hope everyone has received the
special Davis Ducks CD created for Ed Fair. If you did not receive
yours please let me know. I would like to give thanks to Mr.
Klanke, Tosin, Ama, and Arivola for creating such a wonderful CD.
The young ladies did all the creating and Mr. Klanke helped with
editing and copying the CD. I wish I could take credit but I
just supplied the pictures and music. They did a great job and I
would like to extend a thank you to them for their
assistance.
Podcast
Aunty Paula (Ms. Keys’
aunt visiting from the states) made a podcast for our classroom.
She had get child record some information they remember about their
country reports and then put it altogether into a podcast. It has
now been uploaded for your enjoyment on our swift
page.
End
of the Year Party
We will have a 1st grade end of
the year party on June 8th at the GQ. So far the plan is to have a
water slide, bouncy castle, food, games, and a special presentation
for parents. Those planning the party have estimated needing 2,500
from each student to cover the cost. Please submit your money as
soon as possible. If you will not be here for the party please let
me know. Parents – we would love for as many of you who
are available to come and join the fun!
SUBJECT REVIEW
Literacy:
Student Anthology Story:
Sleep Is for Everyone Paul Showers
Phonemic Awareness:
phoneme isolation focusing on /e/ and –er,
-est
Phonics: Short vowel /e/ea
such as lead, read, bread and inflections –er, -est, -ed, and
-ing
Sight Words: afternoon, bicycle,
carry, hours, parents
Comprehension: This week the
comprehension strategies we focused on were Main Idea, Making
Connections and Making Inferences. Making Inferences is one of the
more difficult strategies for readers but a very beneficial one.
Children sometimes can learn more from a selection than the author
tells. Sometimes they can find clues in the pictures and use what
they have already read to figure out more than the author actually
says. For example, when they read the sentence “When a horse
goes to sleep, it’s eyelids go down” and look at the
sleeping horse in the picture, they can infer that horses sleep
standing up. By making an inference, children learn more about the
way a horse sleeps.
Fluency: Partner reading
and rereading the core story.
Writing: This week we
worked on fables and developing solid stories by setting,
characters and adventures
Grammar: Students learned
the difference between past tense and present tense when writing
verbs. We focused on the past tense of be (go, went) and
learned to use subject-verb agreement.
Math:
In math this week we worked with
pattern blocks. We sorted the bocks using various attributes such
as, shape, size, color, and number of sides. We continued our work
with pattern blocks by duplicating designs. We also worked with
understanding bar graphs as well as measuring in
centimeters.
Social
Studies:
Mrs. Aderin taught the students
about Fables from around the world. The students learned that
fables are made up stories that teach us a lesson. They wrote
their own fables and read them to each other.
Science:
This week geologist found rocks
in various forms on the school property. They should have been able
to identify clay, sand, gravel, pebbles, cobbles, and boulders. We
will continue to look for these materials in our environment, as
well as, look and understand how various rock materials combined
help to add strength, texture, and a pleasing
look.
Quote of the
Week:
“A #2 pencil and a dream
can take you anywhere.” Joyce Meyer
Thank you,
