BACK TO SCHOOL
Dear students and parents,
This
is my first year at AISL. I am very excited about the upcoming
school year and providing academic support to your 3rd, 4th and 5th
graders.
As a new school year approaches, I welcome students, families
and staff to a successful year of teaching and learning. I
look forward to meeting and joining the AISL family. Feel free to
email at fashiru@aislagos.com. Welcome to the 2009/2010 school
year.

CASL Spelling
Strategy
Use the following strategies to teach
the different spelling patterns involving long and short vowel
sounds.
Phonics Warm Up
Activity One: Word
Sort
This activity is designed
to help students learn the rule for each spelling pattern involving
long and short sounds
Activity Two:
Graph Buster
Graph buster focuses on
the whole word rather than breaking the word into sounds or
syllables.
- Say
the word and study the letters
- Close
eyes and say the letters
- Study
the letters again
- Write
the word three times without looking at it.
- Check
the spelling of the word and correct any
misspellings.
Activity Three:
Spelling Road Race Game
Involves a laminated
board with a racetrack marked off into 30 segments. When a child
spells a word correctly, he moves a space for each letter in the
word.
Activity Four:
Building Words
Students get into pairs.
The teacher/Parent begins by placing a card containing either the
rime on the table and saying the sound the rime
makes.
For Example:
“ate”
The teacher/parent then
models building a word by placing card containing either a
consonant such as “L” or a blend such as
“PL” in front of rime.
The student work together
to develop as many real words as they can using letter
cards.
Activity Five:
Spelling Test
Student takes a spelling
test to see if they have mastered the words in that
unit.
*After the spelling test,
they correct any misspelled words and record their performance on a
graph. Then they set a goal for how many words they will spell
correctly on the next unit test.*
