August, 2009
Dear Parents and Students,
It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself to the community
here at AISL. My name is Mr. Leslie Olson, I come from a small town
on the western slope of the Sierras in California. This is my 18th
year of teaching in grades ranging from 4th to High School. AISL
will be my fifth International School. Previously, I have taught in
Romania, Saudi Arabia, and China and Indonesia. My wife, Jane, and
I have been in international teaching for 14 years.
I will be teaching Sixth Grade Math/Science and Seventh Grade
Science here at AISL. I have a K-12 certification in California,
having recieved my teaching credential from San Jose State
University. My Bachelor of Arts degrees came from the University of
California, Santa Barbara. I have degrees in Developemental
Psychology and Sociology.
Your child should expect to have homework after every class.
Whether the class is Math or Science there will be some sort
of follow-up that will be required prior to the next meeting of the
class. Specific assignments will vary with each class. Please look
for assignments written in the student planner and at this Swift
website.
In the course outlines that will follow this introduction, I will
go into greater detail about the resources to be used, the class
grading scheme, as well as, the materials needed for each student.
Please help your child have the materials gathered by next week, so
we can begin the year fully prepared.
Sixth Grade is a year of transition for many students. The course
requirements and expectations of instructors are more rigorous and
demanding. It is a year to begin to shift the responsiblity for
assignments and projects to the student.
Many of the Seventh Grade students have previous experience with
Middle School expectations and requirements.
I look forward to meeting you at the AISL Open House. More
information about the evening will be sent to you soon. If you need
to reach me to discuss your child, the best way is by e-mail. My
address is lolson@aislagos.com Your child’s student planner
is also an avenue that can work to communicate.
I look forward to an educationally stimulating, successful, and fun
year with your child.
Sincerely,
Leslie Olson
About my swift
site
I will be using this page as a way to let parents know what is
going on in class. Below is a directory of how I plan to use the
tabs.
Announcments wil include course syllabus, rubrics, information
about our upcoming trip to Switzerland and other various
communications.
Documents will include most handouts from class.
At present I have the Math Standards in the 6th Grade Math
Documents.
Homework will be posted under the homework tab.
Science students may not have homework everynight as a
lot of the class is lab/activity based and will be completed
in class.
