My NEW name is Nisse Olsen Welchman and I teach MS/HS Spanish and
sponsor HS Student Senate. My husband, Jon Welchman, is a
Grade 4 teacher at AISL. We met here at AISL in 2007.
We were recently married on July 17, 2009. In addition to
teaching and sponsoring student government, I am the Girls' Head
Soccer Coach. From 2007-2009 I taught MS/HS Spanish and PE,
served as the Athletic Director, coordinated After School
Activities, and managed facilities reservations.
I graduated with a BA in International & Area Studies, History,
and Spanish with a Concentration in Latin American Studies from
Kalamazoo College. During my Junior year, I studied at La
Pontifícia Universidad Católica de Chile and lived
with a host family for over 13 months.
Once I graduated, I worked as a Counselor and Women's Golf Coach at
Kalamazoo College. Then I returned to the Colorado Springs
School, which was once my boarding school when my family lived in
Peru. I taught Spanish 2 through 5, and Advanced Placement
while working there. I took a group of students to Oaxaca,
Mexico for 10 days my first year and to Santiago, Chile for 13 days
my second year. In addition to teaching, I also supervised
the Junior Class activities, Student Govenment, the International
Club, and Ultimate Frisbee. I also coached HS volleyball and
basketball and MS soccer.
After 2 years of counseling and 2 years of teaching, I made the
decision to go back to school. I earned my Master of Arts in
Teaching degree for Secondary Spanish from Colorado College in July
2007. This is my third year at AISL. Here I have taught
Exploratory Spanish, Spanish A, Spanish 1 through 3, IB Spanish B,
and PE8. Two years ago I coached Saturday Soccer and
Softball, Girls' Competitive Basketball, and a Goodwill Games
team. I also went with a group of Grade 7/8 students on a
tour of Spain from Málaga to Madrid. Last year a group
of students were fortunate to spend 2 weeks in Salamanca, Spain
taking Spanish lessons at Don Quijote Spanish Language Institute
and living with host families.
I am looking forward to bringing my experience from abroad, in the
classroom, as an active member of school communities for most of my
life, and my passion for education and athletics to the wonderfully
welcoming community here at AISL. I hope you will find the
information on this web site helpful as we continue to develop the
Spanish program in its third year here at AISL. Please feel
free to contact me with any questions or concerns. As they
say in Nigeria, you are WELCOME!
